We believe that young people, especially students, represent the future of journalism. Our Journalism Internship Program focuses on providing students with practical experience in researching, writing, editing, and publishing an online journal.

The program offers not only direct exposure to online magazine journalism, but also immersion in the key political, economic, social and cultural issues shaping the region’s development which form the core of the magazine’s reporting and analysis.

Interns are undergraduate and graduate students from international as well as locally-based schools, such as Anglo-American University, University of New York in Prague, Charles University, and NYU in Prague.

Internship Curriculum

The program includes the following basic activities and duties:

  • Weekly meetings with the editors of Přítomnost and The New Presence.
  • Meetings once a month with the publisher of The New Presence.
  • Proofreading/copy-editing of articles.
  • Assisting in research for ongoing and future articles.
  • Offering input on possible themes and articles.
  • Interacting with the journal’s online community.
  • Meetings with local Czech journalists as well as with Czech journalism students.

In addition to the above, interns are responsible for the following writing assignments:

  • An in-depth, investigative article of 1500 words that examines a regional issue. The topic should be one that allows students to conduct interviews in addition to the usually required research through relevant publications, via Internet, etc.
  • A 750 to 1000 word case study on a country in Central or Eastern Europe.
  • Submitting a weekly journal entry of observations, ideas and general thoughts, which ideally should provide material for the writing assignments.

The journalism program runs the length of a university semester, students take the program for college credit. For further information about the internship program, or to apply, please contact Internship Instructor, Masha Volynsky (masha.volynsky@gmail.com).
